Job Description
Argonne's Vehicle and Mobility Systems department (VMS, vms.taps.anl.gov) is seeking an Predoctoral Engineering Research Associate to conduct research on transportation systems decarbonization. The role also involves participating in the development of a software framework for evaluating large-scale data modeling and techno-economic analytics for transportation and vehicle systems. The successful candidate should have experience in transport system modeling and analysis. The candidate will:
Develop and perform transportation system modeling, energy, and techno-economic analysis using Argonne SMART Mobility Workflow (i.e., Polaris, Autonomie), and TechScape. This includes applications for electric, shared, connected, and automated vehicles, as well as freight transport.
Contribute to the development of TechScape, through the integration of workflows to evaluate various techno-economic analytical scenarios.
Analyze the technical and financial impacts of vehicles and mobility systems and policies within national and international projects.
Assist the team in engagement with stakeholders to foster collaboration and consensus-building on tactical project identification and the deployment of sustainable transportation initiatives.
Assist in organizing training sessions and developing educational materials on vehicle technologies and analytical methods to assist stakeholders in decision-making.
Position Requirements
Candidates must hold a master’s in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field.
Knowledge of engineering computation as applied to vehicle system modeling (e.g., Autonomie).
Knowledge of automotive systems engineering, namely hybrid and electric powertrains, thermal systems design and management, batteries, motors, and EVSE technologies.
Strong skills and experience in software programming, with proficiency in C/C++, Python and Matlab.
Knowledge of techno-economic and environmental analysis is essential.
Ability to analyze the technical and financial impacts of mobility systems and policies.
Experience with different data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau).
Proven ability to engage with stakeholders to facilitate collaboration and consensus-building for deploying high-quality sustainable transportation initiatives.
Skilled oral and written communication skills across all levels of the organization.
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants must have a strong background in transportation systems and vehicle technologies.
A background in public policy.
Experience in data science, data analytics, and data visualization, as well as experience in conducting environmental assessments and cost-benefit analysis.
