Job Description
Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory located near Chicago, Illinois, has an opening for a Postdoctoral Appointee specialized in large-scale hydrodynamic modeling at the Department of Hydrology, Environmental Science Division.
The Postdoctoral Appointee will work toward advancing state-of-the art hydrodynamic modeling. As such, you will build high resolution, large-scale hydrologic and hydrodynamic models to support near real-time forecasting of flood hazards, especially for urban areas and critical infrastructure.
The Postdoctoral appointee will join a group of scientists working on this project supported by Argonne’s Center for Climate Resilience and Decision Science (CCRDS). The hydrodynamic modeling will utilize the leading high performance computing platforms at ALCF (https://www.alcf.anl.gov) and other Department of Energy computing platforms.
This is a two-year term position that we want to fill immediately.
Position Requirements
- Recent PhD (typically completed within the last 3 years) in hydrology, civil engineering or a related field.
- Expertise in developing, modifying, and working with hydrological and hydrodynamic models (e.g., WRF-Hydro, HiPIMS, TRITON, ANUGA, etc.).
- Understanding of hydrologic and hydrodynamic processes and coupled modeling.
- Experience in large-scale hydrologic and hydrodynamic modeling, calibration techniques, and data assimilation.
- Knowledge of developing flood observation datasets from multiple sources.
- Familiarity with high-performance computational platforms. Experience with GPU coding is preferred.
- Skilled in data analysis, statistics, and visualization, especially on large datasets.
- Experience in writing and modifying scientific code in Fortran, C, C++, CUDA and Python.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Effective organizational skills and the ability to coordinate across a broad spectrum of activities.
