What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a creative, motivated Postdoctoral Appointee with a passion for exploring new photonics, optical sensor, and quantum technologies that have high potential to impact national security applications. You will assume a key role within a high performing and cohesive team of applied physicists, electrical and optical engineers, and material scientists to perform R&D that will enable next-generation lasers, sensors, quantum systems and communication links. You will have opportunities to contribute across a full spectrum of relevant technology areas, working from device concept and simulation through fabrication and test. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Perform experimental research involving novel semiconductor-based emitters, detectors, photonic circuits, nanophotonic devices, sensors, quantum systems, MEMs, and infrared imaging arrays. + Prototype and evaluate photonic microsystems that integrate micro-optics, optoelectronics, and electronics. + Publish original research in top-tier journals, conference proceedings, and patents. + Enhance laboratory fabrication, test and prototyping efforts by building new capabilities and supporting existing programs. + Develop and pursue new opportunities in areas that support the Sandia mission activities. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Science, Applied Physics, Physics, Materials Science or a closely related field conferred within five (5) years prior to employment + Record of publication and innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents + Experience in experimental characterization in optoelectronics, nanophotonics, MEMS, atomic/molecular/optical physics, plasmonics, sensor arrays and/or relevant materials + Experience with one or more of the following: + solid-state physics + electromagnetics + quantum or Atomic, Molecular, Optical (AMO) physics + classical optics + optoelectronic device engineering + compound semiconductor materials and/or related fields + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience with: + optical laboratory-based testing using lasers, detectors, modulators, fibers, planar waveguides, and relevant characterization equipment. + cleanroom mask/reticle design and related processing techniques such as metal and dielectric materials deposition, wet and dry etching, and lithographic patterning methods. + Experience with any of the following: + heterogeneous integration and microscale packaging techniques + opto-mechanical design, drawing, and machining + photonic integrated circuits + photon detector focal plane array technology, especially in the infrared + designing and characterizing RF microelectronic circuits and devices + optical MEMS + simulation using packages such as COMSOL, ANSYS, Lumerical, or custom software. + Proficiency with software programming and instrument control in languages such as MATLAB, C#, Python or LabView + Ability to work independently and on multi-disciplinary teams in a collaborative environment + Ability to discover, understand, and articulate customer needs + Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills About Our Team: The III-V Optoelectronics Department develops compound semiconductor, photonics, and microsystems for national security applications including high-performance computing, communications, renewable energy, sensing and imaging. As part of Sandia’s Microsystems Science, Technology and Components Center, we research, design, fabricate, prototype, test and deliver novel lasers, photonic integrated circuits, RF and photonic microsystems, optical MEMS and sensors. We focus on R&D of high performance technology platforms and customized microsystems. We use state-of-the-art materials and fabrication capabilities within Sandia’s MESA cleanroom complex to serve a broad mix of internal and external clients. Security Clearance:

Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
