Job Description
Argonne's Vehicle and Mobility Systems department (VMS, vms.taps.anl.gov) is seeking an Engineering Research Associate with experience in transport system modeling and analysis. The role also involves participating in the development of a software framework for evaluating large-scale data modeling and techno-economic analytics for transportation and vehicle systems. The candidate will:
Develop and perform transportation system modeling, energy, and techno-economic analysis using Argonne SMART Mobility Workflow (i.e., Polaris, Autonomie), and TechScape. This includes applications for electric, shared, connected, and automated vehicles, as well as freight transport.
Contribute to the development of TechScape, through the integration of workflows to evaluate various techno-economic analytical scenarios for large-scale vehicle and transport system simulations.
Analyze the technical and financial impacts of mobility systems and policies within national and international projects, particularly the Net Zero World Initiative.
Engage with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to foster collaboration and consensus-building on tactical project identification and the deployment of sustainable transportation initiatives.
Organize training sessions and develop educational materials on vehicle technologies and analytical methods to assist stakeholders in decision-making.
Position Requirements
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.
Knowledge of engineering computation as applied to transportation system modeling (e.g., POLARIS).
Skills and experience in software programming, with proficiency in Python and Matlab.
Knowledge of techno-economic and environmental analysis is essential.
Experience working internationally and collaborating with international organizations to design and implement decarbonization actions in the transportation sector, ensuring alignment with a just transition.
Ability to analyze the technical and financial impacts of mobility systems and policies.
Proven ability to engage with public and private sector stakeholders to facilitate collaboration and consensus-building for identifying tactical projects and deploying high-quality sustainable transportation initiatives.
Capacity to plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases for projects of moderate scope.
Skilled oral and written communication skills across all levels of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with the design and implementation of capacity building and training programs for developing countries.
Ability to be responsive to implementing partners and work outside normal business hours when necessary (due to time zone differences).
