Job Description
The Princeton Language and Intelligence Research Fellowship is a newly established postdoctoral research fellowship for people who have recently received or are about to receive a Ph.D. or doctorate degree and work on large AI models.
Princeton Language and Intelligence (PLI) seeks to develop fundamental understanding of large AI models; enable their application to research and education across academic disciplines; and study societal and ethical implications of AI as well as develop methods to avert any harms. PLI is committed to keeping AI expertise and know-how in the public sphere. Member faculty hail from more than a dozen departments, representing the sciences, humanities, social sciences, and engineering.
About:
Princeton Language and Intelligence Research Fellows will be part of the PLI core principles and design team, composed of best-in-class faculty, research scientists, research software engineers, postdoctoral research fellows, and graduate students. Fellows will have access to PLI’s $9.6M GPU cluster (300 H100s), among the largest machine learning computer cluster in academia. PLI also offers seed grants to enable advances in AI-related research in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering, along with research on the effects of AI on society (ethics, fairness, safety).
Princeton Language and Intelligence Research Fellows receive a yearly salary of $100,000, plus benefits, equipment, compute resources, and $10,000 in yearly research support. Appointments are for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The fellowship commences on or about September 1, 2024.
Fellows will be active participants in the wider PLI community, supporting the PLI mission and partaking in its activities, including workshops, seminars, and events. Fellows will have the opportunity to engage with faculty and students across disciplines.
Eligibility:
Candidates should have a strong interest and track record in design, understanding, or engineering of large AI models, or their applications. Ongoing research projects at PLI work with language, images, multi modal data, science/math, code, scientific data, reinforcement learning, etc. We are also interested in AI safety, fairness, and alignment.
Postdoctoral requirements:
*Both PLI and Princeton University place high value on in-person collaborations and interactions, and we expect selected candidates to participate in-person.
*Ph.D. is expected. The appointment will not be finalized, and an exact start date will not be set, until the candidate has defended their thesis or has proof of a doctorate degree.
*The work location for this position is in-person on campus at Princeton University.
Application:
Candidates are encouraged to apply by the start-of-review date, Friday, December 1, for early consideration. Contact information for three references is required.
Princeton Language and Intelligence is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community. We are interested in receiving applications from members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in their chosen field.
