What Your Job Will Be Like:

Do you want to join a hardworking and multi-disciplinary team that solves significant issues for our nation’s energy infrastructure and the nuclear fuel cycle? We are seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Appointee to work in the research, development and analysis areas of nuclear energy, safeguards and nonproliferation. In this position, you will gain experience in a wide range of technical subject areas that require a diverse knowledge and expertise with a focus on developing a better understanding of how future reactors designs, fuels, and fuel cycles change our understanding of conventional nuclear safeguards, security, and safety. This position will study emerging fuel types and fuel cycle processes to develop an in-depth understanding of how they fit into current regulatory regimes. You will work in a collaborative environment, coordinating across different science and engineering fields, to address topics related to deployment of advanced nuclear reactors. On any given day, you may be called on to:
+ Evaluate advanced reactor fuels or processes to support assessment of safety, security or safeguards topics.
+ Apply an understanding of chemistry to evaluate process flows, facility inventory and material response to abnormal environments.
+ Perform lab-scale testing to characterize and analyze material related to nuclear fuel and fuel cycle processes.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100%.
Qualifications We Require:
+ PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
+ Experience in the following:
+ Material synthesis.
+ Materials characterization.
+ Experimental research and technique development.
+ Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at professional scientific conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
+ Strong background in the following:
+ Chemical analyses
+ Working in a laboratory setting
+ Experience in the following:
+ Data collection and analysis – preferably aerosol collection
+ Material synthesis, characterization, and analytical measurements, such as BET, SEM, XRD, TGA, ICP-MS, and spectroscopic methods.
+ Understanding of the nuclear fuel cycle Interest in international nuclear safeguards, nuclear security and nonproliferation.
+ Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivelent security clearance.
About Our Team:
The mission of the International Safeguards and Engagements Department (6832) is to provide technical solutions to the international safeguards regime and support the development of safeguards and export control competencies in partner countries. Through our US government sponsors we research technologies, build capabilities, and provide analyses to support the international nuclear nonproliferation monitoring regime's mission of ensuring that nuclear activities are used for peaceful purposes.

Security Clearance:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
