What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Inertial Sensors Department. You will support Sandia’s advanced MEMS sensor technology development by working on both fundamental research topics in material science and applying these learnings to real sensor applications having consequence in national security applications. This position involves research into the fundamental physical properties of Silicon Nitride and other materials used in microelectronics processing such as, electrochemically deposited metals, 3D printed materials, as well as, material science research needed to improve heterogeneous integration strategies. Current activities include uncovering fundamental physical properties of microelectronics materials while pioneering new microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based technologies for navigation grade accelerometers with long lifetime and harsh environment applications. Future opportunities exist in other Sandia mission areas such as non-proliferation, Energy, and Homeland Security.
Our dedicated team has a large mix of work including Research and Development (R&D) design and product engineering with exciting opportunities to support high impact mission programs.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
+ Team closely with internal and external expertise for fundamental research related to inertial sensor materials, fabrication, integration, device characterization and testing.
+ Partner with experimental, characterization, and modeling experts to advance fundamental research of materials for microelectronics processing.
+ Coordination and execution of experiments that are used to validate models.
+ Active participation in analyzing, interpreting, and reporting on characterization, experimental, and modeling data.
+ Use Sandia’s internal facilities including the MESA Fabs, MEMS environmental test labs, post-fab packaging resources, as well as failure analysis characterization.
+ Actively publish and present research to the broader scientific community.
+ Present technical content and results internally within the team as well as, externally to partners, customers, and management
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.
Qualifications We Require:
+ Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Materials Science or related STEM field conferred within five (5) years prior to employment
+ Experience with:
+ semiconductor and/or material characterization techniques (SEM, TEM, etc.)
+ semiconductor fabrication techniques and processes
+ data analysis
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
+ Academic or professional experience in inertial sensors or MEMS
+ Understanding of electrochemistry
+ Ability to conceive and propose ideas for process improvement through troubleshooting to overcome challenges and improve yield
+ Strong interpersonal skills and eagerness to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team environment
About Our Team:
The Inertial Sensors Department, 5216, performs state-of-the-art design, fabrication, and testing of MEMS based sensor technologies for national security applications. The team partners closely with Sandia’s Microelectronics Engineering Science Applications (MESA) center with internal facilities and competency in microelectronics design, fabrication, and testing. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Position Information:
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
