The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral appointee. The candidate will develop physics-based crystal plasticity models for the long-term behavior of high temperature metallic materials, focusing on austenitic stainless steels.
The candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop crystal plasticity material models for the high temperature performance of stainless steel under long-term creep and thermal aging conditions, with a particular focus on additively manufactured (AM) materials. A focus of this project will be on developing new models to represent key microstructural features founds in AM materials, in particular models for dislocation structure development and the influence of dislocation and precipitation structure on material strength. The candidate will help draft and publish technical reports, conference papers, and journal publications describing the research and will be expected to attend and present at technical conferences.
The prospective candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field.
Experience with crystal plasticity methods.
Skilled in oral and written communications and presentations at all levels of the organization.
A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
Experience working with dislocation field theories and continuum descriptions of dislocation transport.
Experience working with CALPHAD methods is highly desired, as is specific knowledge of precipitation hardening models for metal alloys.
Experience modeling stainless steel, additively manufactured materials, and/or FCC metal alloys.
Experience using the MOOSE simulation framework.
