Job Description
Are you an experienced and ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a research background in urban air pollution science and wish to contribute to a large European project on designing nature based solutions for air pollution mitigation in cities? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities?
This is a unique opportunity to join the exciting European Horizon 2020 project UPSURGE which will provide a new development model for cities based on nature based solutions for renaturing urban space and addressing the challenges of cities’ carbon footprint and air pollution.
This interdisciplinary role will be directly guided by Dr Jim McQuaid (providing expertise in atmospheric monitoring), Professor Alison Tomlin (urban dispersion) and Dr Cat Scott (nature based solutions), but will also benefit from wide ranging interactions with the UPSURGE project team.
Holding a PhD (or close to completion) in the Physical Sciences, Environmental Science, Engineering, Environmental Statistics or related topics, you will have an excellent working knowledge of air pollution science including monitoring techniques, emissions and dispersion mechanisms. Experience in processing of large and complex data sets, statistics and chemical or dispersion simulation is also desirable.
The appointed researcher will contribute to the development of a city based monitoring system and data analysis procedure that will form a crucial part of the methodology for the evaluation of nature based solutions for reducing air pollution exposure. The approach will then be shared with other partner cities within the UPSURGE project in order to assist in the development of general guidelines for planting approaches.
