Job Description
Postdoc Focused on Optimization and Closed-Loop Neuromodulation
Principal Investigator: David Escobar, PhD
Lerner Research Institute Department: Biomedical Engineering
Lab Research Topics:
- Deep brain stimulation (DBS)
- Neural control engineering using feedback (closed-loop) approaches
- Pathophysiology of Parkinson’s disease
- Signal processing and data science
- Data-driven mathematical modeling of brain circuits

Job Responsibilities:
- Independent project design with the goal of data generation, analysis, interpretation and manuscript preparation
- Collect human electrophysiological and behavioral data in the operating room and postoperatively in the clinic
- Write peer-reviewed publications and participate in the preparation of grants
- Study the degree to which controlled changes in neural oscillatory activity in the basal ganglia, attained using closed-loop DBS, alter motor function in patients with Parkinson’s disease
Education:
- PhD or MD/PhD required
- MD with relevant laboratory experience may substitute for PhD
Languages:
- English Proficiency proof required for candidates arriving on J-1, J-2, or F1 + OPT visa status
Work Experience:
- Previous experience in a research or academic setting. Graduate student experience meets this requirement.
- Scientific writing experience
Additional Preferred Qualities:
- Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree in engineering, neuroscience, or related field
- Background in signal processing and linear algebra
- Extensive programming experience with MATLAB, Simulink, and Python
- Expertise in animal or human electrophysiology (EEG, ECoG, EMG, single units) and neurophysiology
- Preferred but not required: background in feedback control and real-time systems
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods
- Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment
- Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information
- Ability to distinguish color
- Manual dexterity to handle specimens and repair equipment
- Ability to lift and transport equipment or specimens weighing up to 20 pounds
- May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, bio-hazards, radioactive materials, etc.

Pay Range
Minimum hourly: $0.01
Maximum hourly: $333,340.26
