What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking up to two dedicated and highly motivated post-Bachelor's candidates with strong background and the skills for both standard and challenging chemical synthesis and materials characterization to work as Laboratory Technologists (job title: General Technologist). Beyond these core skills, aptitude for electrochemical methods/synthesis, fabrication of prototypes, installation/programming of custom lab equipment and/or data analysis is desired. The selected applicant’s work will directly support proof-of-concept to prototype-level engineering for projects serving a wide variety of customers working in the national interest. We are seeking a candidate with technical competence, strong desire to complete challenging, novel and complex tasks, is mission oriented, and works well alongside similarly motivated colleagues in small teams (5 – 10 staff, technologists, postdocs and students). On any given day, you may be called on to: + Expand your knowledge and develop unique skills with a wide variety of technologies and fields, including in chemical synthesis, electrochromic devices, electroplating, analytical electrochemistry, radiation sensing polymers, custom batteries, thermal-vacuum environmental testing, and even radioactive chemistry/electrochemistry + Work towards gaining new materials characterization capabilities, such as learning to run and apply innovative equipment such as state-of-the-art SEM/EDS, XRF, XRD, Raman, FTIR, NMR, TEM, ion mills, tribometers and more + Work side-by-side with expert scientists and engineers who will be both mentors and colleagues, teaming to address this broad spectrum of unique science and technology challenges + Lead and manage a state-of-the-art set of chemistry laboratories Qualifications We Require: + Bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological, chemical, physical sciences, or other relevant field + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Strong sense of mission, integrity, and commitment to the national interest + Passion for solving problems: technical, logistical, etc. + Demonstrated curiosity about experimental research + Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, learn effectively, and grow in capability in a demanding career focused on mission essentials + Experience in: + synthesizing organic or inorganic materials via chemical and/or electrochemical methods + characterizing chemicals/materials for chemical and structural properties + designing/building custom laboratory equipment + managing a laboratory + programming (MATLAB, Python, C++ or similar) + CAD software (Solidworks, Pro-E or similar) + working with DAQ systems and basic PID/Arduino controller programming + Well-developed lab skills and demonstrated capacity to work safely + Demonstrated initiative and a willingness to take on considerable individual responsibility + Ability to work effectively in a collaborative teaming environment About Our Team: The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature sensors and sensor-based system for a variety of sensing applications including chemical, biological, and explosives. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandia's MESA facility. We also have state-of-the-art microbiology capabilities to aid in biological sensor development. Our technologies are designed to be non-invasive or minimally invasive, and easy to use in the field or at the point of care. Security Clearance:
