The Opportunity
- Do you have a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field?
- Keen to be part of a project exploring ground-breaking science?
- Join the Revolutionary Energy Storage Systems Future Science Platform team and help deliver transformational energy storage solutions
CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.
As part of the Power Systems and Control Team, the CERC Fellow will investigate the technical possibility and economic feasibility of using new energy storage systems to transition electrical power networks from wide areas with a common synchronous frequency to multiple local network zones, each with their own independent frequency. All aspects of electrical power network reliability and security are to be considered throughout the proposed transition pathway.
The project will emphasise the technical capability of batteries with appropriate power electronics converters (or other storage technologies as relevant) to contribute as cost-effective solution component options.
This project will be part of the Revolutionary Energy Storage Systems Future Science Platform (RESS FSP). The RESS FSP is exploring ground-breaking science to deliver the required transformational energy storage solutions. Without the limitations of current energy storage platforms, materials, device designs and management systems, the FSP environment is designed to enable paradigm shifts, critical for the revolutionary changes needed to power the future.
Your duties will include:
- Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes, including contributing to research and/or technology through the development of original and adapted experimental methods, equipment or software.
- Participating in the identification and definition of specific research (and/or technological) problems with colleagues, through extensive literature reviews and systematic interviews with power systems and economics technical experts.
- Showing initiative to seek new approaches to meet research needs when encountering new problems where methods are not defined.
- Making significant contributions to the interpretation and communication of research or technological results and may collaborate on drafting presentations to, and/or detailed written reports for, clients and the scientific and/or technology community.
Location: Newcastle, NSW
Salary: AU$92k - AU$101k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
