The Electronic, Optical and Nano Materials department is searching for a Postdoctoral Appointee who is dedicated, self-motivated, hardworking, and interested in performing innovative research in various electrochemical, electrocatalytic, and energy storage areas with a strong interest in solving important national security issues. We are a diverse, inclusive, and multi-disciplinary group. The team interacts with researchers at Sandia, universities, and industry working on various electrochemical projects including electrocatalysts and electrodeposition. Opportunities exist to engage in other materials-related projects such as novel bio/chemical sensors, chemical separations, and various electrochemical energy storage system as well as opportunities to acquire new expertise. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Perform original laboratory studies to develop, fabricate and test new platforms for various energy storage systems + Investigate relevant faradaic reactions and prepare low temperature molten salt or ionic liquid systems to conduct relevant electrochemical studies + Collect and interpret electrochemical measurements such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, amperometric and potentiometric traces and battery cycling data + Perform vacuum deposition or electrodeposition of various materials + Publish findings in leading journals and present research at scientific conferences Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field plus a bachelor's degree in a STEM field, PhD must be conferred within 5 years prior to employment + Experience in electrochemical energy storage and/or general electrochemistry + Record of publication and conference presentations + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience operating vacuum systems, glove boxes, and film deposition methods (e.g. RF-sputtering, evaporation, etc.) + Understanding of battery charge/discharge curves + Experience building energy storage devices + Experience with materials characterization techniques, such as; Raman, XRD, XPS, SEM etc. + A record of academic achievement as proven by high GPAs for relevant undergraduate degree(s) and graduate degree(s) + Effective communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills that build effective scientific collaborations with a diverse population of researchers + Ability to effectively plan and manage time for diverse experimental requirements About Our Team: The Electronic, Optical and Nanomaterials Department 1816 provides innovation in the design, synthesis and development of advanced, multifunctional materials to satisfy unique needs in electronic, optical, electrochemical, structural and selective-molecular-binding applications. We control chemical and structural characteristics, from the nano- to the micro-scale, in inorganic and hybrid systems to explore new material constructs and strategies aimed at optimizing and expanding material performance. Our efforts support DOE Defense Programs, DOE Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, DOE Electricity Distribution and Energy Reliability offices, other federal agencies and industry. In addition, we pursue partnerships with universities and establish ongoing collaborations with other experts in the field to leverage our research investments while participating in, and contributing to, the international research community. Research thrusts include nanoparticle, nanofiber, and atomic layer deposited materials, thin films, passive and active materials for electronic, magnetic, photonic, electromechanical, and fluidic microsystems, self-assembly, and colloid chemistry. The main research focus of the group you would join are: + Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (including energy storage, corrosion, electrodeposition and catalysis) + Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, chemical and bio sensors, membranes for CO2 capture or water treatment). Security Clearance:
