Bidder Eligibility: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns. Application of this requirement will not supersede collective bargaining agreements. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs: If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs. If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date. What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a motivated individual with expertise and interest in subsurface geosciences with a focus on modeling heat transfer, mass transport, and groundwater flow. As a subsurface geoscientist in Sandia’s Climate Systems department, you will be part of an interdisciplinary team that conducts climate impact analysis in the subsurface, including but not limited to problems in groundwater resources, Arctic permafrost thaw, and analysis of subsurface geothermal energy reservoirs through numerical simulation and model development. As a Climate Systems team member, you will have the opportunity to contribute to and lead R&D activities directly related to climate security and energy resilience. This is a highly inter-disciplinary position where you will be able to grow and broaden your skills in subject matters ranging from numerical modeling of subsurface systems, high-performance computing, data analysis, visualization, and code writing. You will have opportunities to expand your network with leading researchers from multiple fields, publish cutting edge research in high-impact journals, and explore internal and external funding opportunities that can lead to further career development. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Perform subsurface flow and transport modeling using high-performance computing resources + Analyze and interpret subsurface data (e.g., geological, geophysical, or geochemical) + Present your work at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals + Address complex problems in support of broad-ranging mission areas while collaborating with highly motivated researchers at multiple institutions Qualifications We Require: + Recent Ph.D. in Earth Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Computer/Computational Science, Civil/Environmental/Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related STEM field + Experience using a Linux operating system + Experience developing and running numerical models of subsurface flow and/or transport + Familiarity with programming languages used for modeling and analysis (C, C++, Fortran, Python, Julia, R, MATLAB, etc.) + Research experience showing a record of peer-reviewed manuscripts in scientific journals and conference presentations + Only U.S. Persons (U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents, asylees, or refugees) capable of obtaining and maintaining a security clearance are eligible for consideration Qualifications We Desire: + Expertise in scientific computing including model simulation and development in subsurface flow, solute transport, and heat transfer + Experience in setting up and running PFLOTRAN models (see www.pflotran.org) + Familiarity with high performance computing environments such as computer clusters or super computers + Ability to conduct self-directed research and independent thinking for troubleshooting or debugging numerical model set-ups + Ability to work in multi-disciplinary research environments on problems comprising diverse application domains + Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills + Desire to perform in a dynamic environment and demonstrated interest and/or experience in service to the nation + Ability to travel for business and research purposes About Our Team: The Climate Systems Department is a multi-disciplinary department that applies and advances climate modeling and analysis tools to support Sandia’s climate and global security missions. Department staff have a wide range of expertise in modeling complex earth systems and analyzing climate variability and dynamics to provide insight and understanding of climate change and its impacts on human and natural systems. Department staff leverage research expertise to understand and model interactions between the Earth’s atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere. Technical activities cover the spectrum of analytical climate science including computer simulation, data inversion, optimization, uncertainty quantification, algorithm development, downscaling, and impact analysis.
