Job Description
The Department of Neurosurgery in the Heersink School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is looking to recruit a researcher to fill an open Instructor or Assistant Professor position working in the lab of Dr. James Markert. The candidate should hold a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. degrees and a track record of productivity in research, including publications and potentially grant awards, commensurate with their rank.
The position is open for research interests in the field of Neuro-oncology, including, but not limited to, primary and metastatic adult brain tumors, genomics, proteomics, kinomics and epigenetics, immunobiology of host-tumor interactions, and relevant patient-derived models of cancer. The major focus of the laboratory is oncolytic viral therapy and immunotherapy of cancers, with an emphasis on translational research. Individuals interested in applying for this position should be comfortable supervising and troubleshooting experimental work in these areas and working with and in some cases supervising research associates, graduate and undergraduate students, residents, and post-doctoral students. Common assays in the laboratory include tissue culture, viral culture, PCR, RT-PCR, cloning and oncolytic viral constructionengineering, ELISA, Western blotting, Southern blotting, mouse surgery and necropsy, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence microscopy. The laboratory also requires familiarity with biostatistics and enough familiarity with bioinformatics to be able to either code or work with UAB bioinformatics to perform a variety of clustering algorithms and deconvolution analyses to be performed on pre and post-treatment specimens. The laboratory is moving to a larger involvement in single-cell analyses and spatial transcriptomics and the successful candidate should be prepared to be involved and develop a knowledge base and skills in these areas.
While the candidate will not be required to obtain independent grant funding, the ability to write portions of grants and manuscripts, as well as to perform the other aspects of manuscript preparation, is an expectation of the position.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is an outstanding tertiary care institution with a vibrant Neuro-oncology Program within the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. The successful applicant will work in partnership with the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Neuro-oncology Program.
