The Opportunity
- Do you have a PhD in molecular biology, microbiology or biotechnology?
- Are you passionate about synthetic biology and want to develop new tools for the production of high-value products using precision fermentation?
- Join the CSIRO Environment team for this exciting 3-year postdoctoral fellowship role
CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.
The precision fermentation industry has been rapidly growing in recent years, driven by a desire for complementary, sustainable food protein. Yeast and fungus such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae are being redesigned and used as ingredients for this market. However, their thick robust cell wall that makes them recalcitrant to recovery of high-value fermentation products, which adds to downstream processing cost and time. This project will aim to streamline the product recovery process by engineering an autolysis pathway that can be switched on as desired, thereby circumventing the need for costly chemical or mechanical cell lysis.
Your duties will include:
- Engineering a signal-induced expression system in coordination with a small molecule-mediate signal booster system in oleaginous fungus.
- Exploring and identifying fungal autolysis systems.
- Coupling a signal-inducible switch with fungal cell autolysis system to finetune product recovery.
- Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
Location: Canberra, ACT
Salary: AU$92k - AU$101k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

To be considered you will need:
- A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD). The doctorate must be in a relevant discipline area, such as molecular biology, microbiology or biotechnology. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
- Expertise in synthetic biology.
- High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
