Job Description
The accelerator development group in Argonne’s Physics Division built the world’s first superconducting linear accelerator for heavy ions, ATLAS, four decades ago and continues to be the world’s recognized leader in technology for superconducting particle accelerators for ion linacs. The group’s home base, ATLAS, is a state-of-the-art National User Facility and hosts 300-400 users each year supporting research for the Office of Nuclear Physics of the Department of Energy. We also support the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory which provides ultra-bright, high-energy storage ring-generated x-ray beams for research across a broad range of scientific disciplines.
We are seeking a highly self-motivated post-doctoral appointee with a strong recording of scientific and engineering success to carry out accelerator development for ongoing and new accelerator projects at ANL.
In this position, you will:
Conceive and execute innovative, intellectually challenging, high-quality research, particularly in the area of RF superconductivity, in support of major DOE upgrades to Argonne’s user facilities at the Advanced Photon Source and ATLAS
Perform development on and lead aspects of the technical study of a superconducting RF-based electron gun. Applications are as a low emittance source for DOE Free Electron Laser (FEL) accelerator projects
Participate in the development of next generation technologies for superconducting ion linacs based on thin film technologies
Develop accelerator systems for the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade enabling storage of diffraction limited electron beams in the APS-Upgrade ring
Make oral presentations at meetings, conferences, and seminars, publish results in refereed journals, and participate in the scientific life of the Laboratory
Position Requirements
Ph.D. degree level in in physics or engineering with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent
Strong self-motivation, strong desired for self-directed problem solving, desire and skill to perform a wide variety of hands-on and sometimes physically demanding laboratory work
Creativity in devising and implementing solutions to new and complex technical problems
Excellent technical judgement based on the capability to recognize a problem and then apply sound (quantitative) principles of physics and engineering to devise solutions
The capability to work effectively on technical problems in a fast-paced, demanding, and oftentimes, deadline driven environment
Knowledge of materials, particularly metals such as aluminum and stainless steel and some experience with metal fabrication techniques such as machining, rolling, forming and brazing
Some hands-on experience with vacuum systems, electronics, and RF systems
Good communication skills and the desire and ability to discuss technical ideas closely with colleagues
Additionally, experience in electromagnetics, cryogenics and accelerator systems are considered positively
