CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

In this position you will undertake research on the development of a new generation of biodegradable orthopaedic implants based on auxetic metamaterials and structures via computational modelling and additive manufacturing.  They will work with a multidisciplinary team of experts in additive manufacturing, biomedical manufacturing, materials science and engineering and computational modelling with CSIRO Manufacturing and our university partners. 

The Fellow will be based at CSIRO site in Clayton, Victoria and able to access a wide range of laboratory facilities and great opportunities for the Fellow to collaborate and develop new skills and innovative ideas.

Your duties will include:

• Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes. 
• Recognise and exploit opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.
• Utilise design thinking methodology to plan and prepare research proposals and apply non-academic impact methodology to research projects.
• Carry out research investigations requiring originality, creativity and innovation.

Location:  Clayton, Victoria

Salary:  AU$92k - AU$101k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering or equivalent. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
• Proven record of using computational modelling and simulation in designing and developing metamaterials/structures for additive manufacturing.
• A demonstrated knowledge of additive manufacturing of metallic materials.
• A demonstrated knowledge of materials characterisation and testing.

Eligibility

Applications for this position are open to Australian/New Zealand Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents or Australian temporary residents currently residing in Australia and be able to commence in the role by 30 June 2023.

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
