What You Will Achieve: Role Summary
Reporting to the Head of Scientific Planning and Operations for the Inflammation and Immunology Research Unit (I&I RU), the I&I RU Chief of Staff is responsible for proactively supporting the I&I Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) in internal and external communications, helping to develop the people of I&I RU, and supporting the implementation of the I&I RU strategy. The Chief of Staff supports the culture and long-term vision and mission of the I&I RU. The Chief of Staff works closely with members of the I&I RU Leadership Team, including the Head of Scientific Planning and Operations and the CSO, to enable effective cross-functional collaboration and efficient delivery of the I&I portfolio. The Chief of Staff supervises a team of administrative leads. The Chief of Staff partners with members of the I&I RU Strategy and Operations team on business planning, site operations and colleague engagement.
How You Will Achieve It: Role Responsibilities
Provides operational support for and acts as sounding board to prepare for CSO key interactions, including meetings and presentationstc.
Provides advice and guidance as an objective sounding board to the CSO pertaining to internal and external events
Fosters the vibrant culture of I&I RU by acting as a resource for all colleagues, championing diversity, equity and inclusion in the I&I RU at all levels, supporting Pfizer rewards and recognition programs, leading the promotion process, and helping to match colleagues with career development opportunities
Builds agendas for, leads, and captures action items from I&I RU Leadership Team and Extended Leadership Team meetings
Addresses and/or coordinates requests from various Pfizer stakeholders, including representatives from Worldwide Research, Development, and Medical Leadership Team (WRDM-LT), RU, Global Product Development (GPD).
Interfaces with and engage key stakeholders (e.g., WRDM-LT members, WRDM-LT Chiefs of Staff and other WRDM members, I&I RU leaders and members, I&I Category leaders) to manage and coordinate operational and planning needs on behalf of the CSO
Supports planning and coordination of key complex meetings for the CSO
Partners with Communications team members to support planning and management of internal and external communications needs of the CSO, such as: town halls, site visits, external appearances, press releases, media coverage.
In partnership with members of the I&I Strategy and Operations Team, provides operational support to I&I RU colleagues to realize the I&I RU vision and goals
Partners with human resources colleagues and others to implement development opportunities for I&I RU colleagues
Helps navigate broader WRDM and Pfizer organization to connect colleagues to appropriate individuals or resources, as needed
Develops strong understanding of our R&D strategy, pipeline and capabilities, and leverages this knowledge and personal scientific background to inform priorities for the CSO
Works proactively with WRD Chiefs of Staff to deliver robust planning and partnerships
Serves as point of contact for patient engagement activities in the I&I RU
Qualifications
Must-Have
Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of related scientific and/or operational experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry or Master’s degree and 6+ years of related scientific and/or operational experience in the biotech/industry
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience partnering with and influencing senior leaders
Experience developing a network of trusted relationships with peers and other stakeholders
Experience coaching and developing people
Nice-to-Have
PhD in a life science or related discipline
R&D Operational and Business Line knowledge/experience
Familiarity with Pfizer or other relevant organization, particularly R&D/Business Units/Enabling Functions
Experience managing day-to-day planning and communication activities
Experience leading a small team
Robust understanding of biopharmaceutical industry, R&D processes, and the external and internal business environment
Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
