What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking an experimental postdoctoral researcher to develop sustainable materials solutions for hydrogen generation and storage. The selected applicant will focus on design, synthesis and characterization of novel hydrogen-rich materials and molecules based on inorganic, organic, and organometallic clusters of main group and transition metals. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Synthesize and purify new compounds and characterize them with spectroscopic and thermal analysis techniques + Perform structural refinements using X-ray crystallography and neutron diffraction. + Collaborate with our team of theorists and other experimentalists (including people across Sandia, at other national labs, and in academia) in the rational design of hydrogen-rich materials. + Publish both first- and subsequent- author publications in chemistry/material journals. Qualifications We Require: + PhD in chemistry, materials science, or other relevant field with a strong emphasis on synthesis of new materials and molecules and their structural characterization. + Direct, hands-on experience with handling air-sensitive compounds, such as via Schlenk line or glove-box techniques. + Experience with standard analytical techniques (spectroscopy, diffraction, electron microscopy, porosimetry, etc.). + Evidence of extensive research expertise in the form of technical publications and conference presentations. + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Extensive hands-on laboratory experience and capable of independent and safe laboratory practices for synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles, small molecules, high-entropy alloys, or porous materials (e.g. Metal-Organic Frameworks). + Knowledge of and experience with advanced characterization techniques, such as neutron methods, soft X-ray techniques, small-angle X-ray scattering, XPS, TEM, solid-state NMR, and mass-spectroscopy. + Background in hydrogen-materials interactions or materials-based hydrogen storage. + Demonstrated record of high technical achievement and the ability to conduct creative, independent research + Excellent verbal and written communication abilities About Our Team: The Energy Nanomaterials Department at Sandia is a research organization specializing in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for energy and national security applications. Projects in the department's research portfolio include applications of nanoporous materials (such as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and porous carbons); materials for energy and hydrogen storage; solid electrolytes; thermoelectrics; superconductors; and advanced characterization (including electron microscopy, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, porosimetry, atomic force microscopy, and nanoindentation). The team also employs data science and machine learning to reveal structure-property-function relationships and discover new materials.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
