The Quantitative Life Sciences Initiative at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for a highly motivated and enthusiastic post-doctoral research associate. This is a 12-month (calendar year), special appointment with 100% research apportionment. This position will be located in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The incumbent in this Postdoctoral Research Position in the Quantitative Life Sciences Initiative will develop a nationally recognized research and education program in Image Analysis and Machine Learning with specific emphasis on 3D image processing, including segmentation of 3D X-ray CT images collected for agricultural research. Development of novel analytic methods will involve both software and algorithms from machine learning and deep learning, and applications to very large voxel data sets. The work will involve consulting with faculty and other postdoctoral associates to assess what image segmentation and analyses are relevant to meet objectives, producing and demonstrating prototype analyses, synthesizing findings, preparing written and graphical reports, and presenting the results. In addition, the work will involve generation of educational materials/curricula relevant to image analysis, machine learning, and related topics for undergraduate and graduate students. Key aspects of a successful program will be the publication of high impact papers, and obtaining external and internal research money to support and maintain nationally and internationally recognized research. Service to the Initiative is also expected with a wide range of options of importance to teaching and research available depending on the candidate’s strengths.
Minimum Required Qualifications
PhD degree in computer science, statistics, or related discipline.
Experience in image analysis.
Experience in algorithm and software development and analyzing very large data sets with high performance computing resources.
Must have evidence of highly developed quantitative skills.
Experience with R and/or Python necessary.
Excellent analytical and written and verbal communication skills.
Strong problem solving skills.
Experience in X-ray CT imaging, life sciences research and interdisciplinary research desired.
Prefer knowledge of advanced statistics and data science.
Familiarity with statistical analysis and database and data warehousing concepts helpful.
Record of peer-reviewed publications in 3D imaging.
Report building experience desirable.
Strong desire to learn new skills and systems and a willingness to adapt to change.
