What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a computational scientist to develop and perform modeling, simulation, and analysis of electron, X-ray, gamma-ray, and neutron radiation transport for Sandia’s nuclear deterrence and other missions. Your work will help define environmental specifications for our nuclear deterrence systems and components and predict the reliability of our engineered technologies in various radiation environment scenarios. You will also apply techniques for verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification to assess the credibility of the simulation and analysis results you deliver. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Develop models, perform high performance computing-based simulations, and analyze data to predict the transport of radiation and its effects on system and component design and qualification + Perform fundamental research and development around radiation physics and effects on materials to provide solutions for next-generation problems + Design and implement computational studies to quantify uncertainties and perform credibility assessments + Identify new research ideas and directions, collaborating with colleagues to write research proposals. + Present results at workshops, conferences, and meetings with sponsors and partners The ND Materials and Rad Effects department is committed to attracting, retaining, and cultivating an outstanding workforce representing a broad group of people and perspectives. Qualifications We Require: + Master’s degree in Physics, Computational Science, Engineering, or related fields, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience + Experience with computational modeling and simulation of radiation transport and effects + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + PhD in Physics, Computational Science, Engineering, or a related field + Experience in performing analyses centered on radiation transport modeling and simulation + Experience with uncertainty quantification, verification & validation, sensitivity analysis, or optimization + Experience with computational modeling and simulation codes such as: finite element, finite difference, finite volume, or particle-in-cell (PIC) + Publication of research results in peer reviewed journals + Proven ability to work autonomously, while integrating effectively into a multidisciplinary team environment + Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to work alongside a team with diverse backgrounds About Our Team: We are the ND Materials and Rad Effects team! We provide expertise in materials and radiation sciences to support Sandia’s missions in nuclear deterrence, proliferation detection and energy. We steward radiography capabilities and exercise them to image and analyze the structure of materials and components. We develop and characterize organic and inorganic materials used as scintillators in radiation detection technologies. We perform detailed modeling, simulation, and experiments to characterize and analyze the effects of ionizing radiation on materials and components used in our engineered systems. All of this is accomplished by bringing to bear our advanced capabilities and the team’s expertise in materials science, chemistry, physics, computation, and engineering.
