Description:
The Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ is seeking candidates for a full-time, research position at the rank of postdoctoral research associate. The SERC is a University-Affiliated Research Center for the U.S. Department of Defense that leverages research expertise across collaborating institutions to advance topics in Systems Engineering. This position offers opportunities to engage with faculty, researchers, and government officials to address complex system problems for remote sensing and Earth science. Beginning as early as January 2021, this position offers an initial one-year term with the possibility of renewal for a second year, subject to satisfactory performance and resource availability. Candidates will work on topics related to a computational testbed for the New Observing Strategies (NOS) thrust within NASA's Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) Advanced Information Systems and Technology (AIST) program.
This position plays a substantive role in architecting the NOS testbed using agile enterprise architecting and systems engineering practices. Research products will have significant visibility within the Earth science community. Research objectives align with broader goals of interoperability and co-simulation in system-ofsystems engineering with model-centric and digital engineering platforms. In close collaboration with the Principle Investigator and senior project staff, the role will design, implement, and evaluate the efficacy of an information system testbed for NOS-style missions that composes multiple observing nodes such as spacecraft, in-situ and airborne sensors, and forecasting models with dynamic information exchange. Research activities define system interfaces using loosely coupled service-oriented patterns, propose concepts of operation, and refine governance models for adoption and evolution. The position will engage with key project stakeholders across engineering and science disciplines at the sponsor organization and disseminate results to the broader Earth science community.
