Job DescriptionThis postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to participate in the operation, enhancement, and application of the Z-Petawatt (ZPW) laser system! A major area of research will be leading the effort to develop laser-produced x-ray sources in the 15-25 keV x-ray range for dynamic diffraction measurements of samples compressed on nanosecond time scales. Will also be a key collaborator in exploring laser-wakefield acceleration for production of high energy x-ray sources for x-ray backlighting and dynamic diffraction experiments. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan, conceive, conduct, or manage research and development for Sandia's customers and sponsors + Direct systematic study toward a fuller knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts, and discovers new approaches to accomplish goals + Create new understandings and capabilities by using the scientific method's hypothesis, test, and evaluation techniques; critical review; or similar engineering research and development methods + Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research
+ Ph.D. in optical engineering, physics, or a closely related technical field + Strong background in laser and optical design, solid-state optics, optical physics, and optical detectors and laser diagnostics + Experience designing, building, and using high-power subpicosecond-class chirped-pulse-amplification (CPA) laser systems to perform high-energy-density science experiments + You have a record of publication and innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance
+ X-ray and particle beam diagnostics design, construction, and fielding + Ultra-High Vacuum system design, assembly, and operation + Data acquisition and control system design and construction using LabVIEW software + Data analysis using Matlab, Mathematica, and/or IDL software + Modeling and simulation of experiments using radiation hydrodynamics and particle-in-cell codes + Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and presentations + Website design and maintenance
The Laser Operations & Engineering department is responsible for developing and applying laser-produced x-ray sources and detectors to support high-energy-density science experiments performed on Sandia’s Z pulsed-power facility. The department is composed of a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and technologists that work together in a collaborative environment to support scientists from around the world that work on Z to pursue research in the areas of inertial confinement fusion, condensed matter physics, atomic physics, shock physics, radiation transport, and planetary science. Department staff develop and operate a suite of high-power lasers including the multi-kilojoule nanosecond-class Z-Beamlet and picosecond-class Z-Petawatt lasers, some of the largest and most powerful lasers in the world. Other unique experimental capabilities include x-ray calibration sources and detectors, thin film coating systems, and target chambers and diagnostics for performing basic and applied research on high-power laser-matter interaction.
