Job DescriptionWe are seeking a dynamic R&D Manager to lead and manage Sandia’s Biomaterials and Biomanufacturing department, dedicated to biological and bioengineering research with applications in renewable energy, carbon management, biomaterials, and biomanufacturing. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Establish strategies to apply the latest biological advances to mission needs in national security and environmental security; + Promote and support the professional development of a staff, assessing their performance, coordinating work assignments, providing recognition, and resolving issues; + Develop a safe, secure, creative, and productive work environment and be responsible for the operation of biology laboratories; + Promote a culture that values diversity and inclusion; + Coordinate recruitment, selection, hiring, and training of new staff; + Participate on the Center leadership team to evaluate strategy and operations; + Develop and sustain partnerships with other Sandia organizations and with universities, other laboratories, and industry; + Develop new programs and identify new internal and external sponsors while maintaining the existing sponsor base.
+ PhD in Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, or Engineering; + Record of strong technical contributions and excellent verbal and written communication skills, as proven by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations; + Strong grant-writing skills with record of developing and managing funded programs with DHS, DoD, NIH, or DOE; + Demonstrated ability to build and develop strong interdisciplinary teams and partnerships across organizational boundaries; + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
+ Ability to develop and implement strategic and business plans; + Biology program development experience with DOE, DHHS, and/or DOD; + Proven ability to motivate, coach, and mentor staff; + Expertise in one or more of the following fields: Biotechnology, Synthetic biology, Genomics; + Experience with operation of BSL-2 laboratories; + Prior technical management experience.
The Sandia Biomaterials and Biomanufacturing Department performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in renewable energy, carbon management, biomaterials, and biomanufacturing, with staff based in Livermore and Emeryville, CA. The department contains a multidisciplinary team of approximately 30 staff, postdocs and technologists with expertise in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, biophysics, analytical chemistry, advanced spectroscopy, microbiology, computational biology, and molecular biology. The basic research activities in the department are focused on developing a basic understanding of the fundamental chemical, biochemical, and thermochemical reactions and interactions that occur at interfaces. The department is also developing a focus on systems and synthetic biology as they relate to biofuel and other chemical production. Applied research activities are focused on enzyme and microbial engineering for biofuel production, advanced biomass pretreatment, metabolic engineering of algae, and advanced imaging techniques. Key sponsors include the DOE Office of Science, DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Sandia LDRD Program.
