Postdoctoral Research Associate - Ames Laboratory

- Job Number: 7069221 (Ref #: R3127)
- Posting Date: Aug 27, 2020
- Application Deadline: Sep 20, 2020
Job DescriptionThe Division of Materials Science and Engineering with Iowa State University at the Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.
The successful candidate will perform research activities and provide advanced scientific and technical support for existing projects with a primarily focus on characterizing novel materials (topological materials, fragile magnets, superconductors) as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field under varying amounts of pressure and/or strain. The person in this position would use and, ideally, extend the research group’s high pressure / strain expertise. Over the past 20 years the group has developed the capabilities to measure magnetization, magnetotransport, ac specific heat and strain gauge dilatometry in piston-cylinder cells; magnetotransport in modified Bridgman cells; large signal magnetization in moissanite and diamond anvil cells (MAC and DAC); and magnetotransport under uniaxial strain in a commercial Razorbill strain cell. Although establishing strong expertise in using diamond pressure cells in the group is not currently a strong priority, we would be happy to consider a person with DAC expertise as well. Although the focus of this position is on use and development of measurements under pressure and strain, the successful candidate will also be able to engage in the synthesis and growth of novel materials, often in single crystal form.
The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and will be expected to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences. The initial appointment will be made for one year, with renewal appointments based on annual performance assessments and availability of funds.
