Job DescriptionWe are seeking a hardworking technologist to work with a multidisciplinary team involving chemists, biologists and engineers who perform research to address problems affecting the nation. The selected candidate will support research and development across a range of missions from biomass conversion to infectious disease and medical diagnostics technology. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work with people in a variety of fields and help perform biological research; + Prepare clinical or environmental samples; + Analyze or manipulate samples using a range of techniques; + Determine and troubleshoot experimental protocols; + Carry out/improve safety processes and documentation to maintain a safe working environment; + Communicate results to team members through team meetings and generation/presentation of experimental data.
+ Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 1 year of experience in a biology related field (e.g. bioanalytical chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, molecular or microbiology); + Hands-on experience with one or more of the following:
- Basic molecular biology techniques including PCR, cloning and/or transformations;
- Basic biochemistry techniques such as ELISA and other immunoassays, protein assays, protein and/or nucleic acid purification,
- Basic cell culture techniques, sterile technique, experience working in BSL2 laboratories; + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
+ Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. + Familiarity with at least one of the following:
- Next generation sequencing and library preparation; gene editing; synthetic biology;
- High-throughput screening of protein and nucleic acid markers;
- Development of diagnostic methods;
- Working with animals/animal models;
- Light microscopy and imaging; electrophoretic techniques (including capillary electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE); chromatography, UV or fluorescence spectroscopy, and bioconjugate chemistry.
The Systems Biology and Biotechnology and Bioengineering Departments perform biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare, and alternative energy. The departments are composed of a multidisciplinary team of staff, postdocs, technologists, and students with expertise in microbiology, virology, molecular biology, computational biology, and analytical chemistry. The basic research activities in the departments include the identification and characterization of clinical and environmental pathogens, developing a systems-level understanding of host-pathogen interactions, and microbiomes relevant to human health and the environment,developing advanced technology including micro- and nanofluidics and engineered automated systems, and new research approaches which include gene-editing and novel nanomaterials. Applied research activities are focused on enzyme and microbial engineering for biofuels development, biological detection, and medical diagnostics.Some of this bioenergy work is carried out in partnership with the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) as well as other external academic and commercial partners.
