Job DescriptionWe are seeking a POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEE We are seeking a Post-doctoral candidate to contribute to the science and development of electronic oxide materials for future Department of Energy (DOE) applications. We are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented individual that is capable of supporting programs in this technical area. Active research and development areas include synthesis of electronic mixed oxides and electrical characterization of mixed oxide materials with applications for voltage and current elements. The candidate would be expected to interact with fellow technical workers of diverse technical backgrounds as well as fellow technical workers in both Development and Production of Active Ceramic materials and devices. Within our Active Ceramics group, the candidate would contribute to technical meetings within Sandia National Laboratories, to technical meetings on the national level, to publish in leading peer-reviewed journals, and to publish and present cutting-edge technical work at technical conferences.
+ Ph. D. in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Ceramics, Chemistry, or closely-related field + Bachelor’s of Science in STEM field + Ability to obtain and retain a DOE Q-level Security Clearance
+ Technical experience with a proven publication record in the area of materials fabrication and processing, particularly related to advanced ceramics and glasses + Skills related to additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, or other advanced materials processing approaches with demonstrated research experience in structure-processing-property performance + Experience in inorganic material synthesis and/or characterization of lead-based ferroelectrics and zinc oxide varistor material + Relationships of additively manufactured materials + Ability to conceive, develop, build, and qualify novel material evaluation tools + Extensive experience working in a laboratory + Ability to engage and to contribute to multiple programs + Ability to interact with team members of diverse technical backgrounds + Ability to carry out independent research under the umbrella of related programs with varying needs + Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare competitive research proposals and refereed journal articles
The FENG and Tube Lifecycle Engineering Department (2584) is responsible for the design and development of Neutron Tubes (NTs) and and Ferroelectric Neutron Generators (FENGs) for War Reserve, Laboratory, and Field Test applications of Nuclear Weapons. Within the department resides expertise in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and electrical engineering and these diverse areas work together to create new technology and mature technology in the areas of active ceramic and insulative ceramic materials, NT and NG physical and electrical design, and NT and NG modeling/simulation. The Active Ceramics Design Team creates and produces a wide range of specialized electronic ceramics and fabricates prototype and weapon stockpile components using ferroelectric ceramics. The materials are developed using traditional and solution-based processes. The expertise in the department is also responsible for the formal development and Product Realization of new or improved NTs and NGs for the Nuclear Stockpile. The Team supports strategic partners through JOWOG-based activities. Team members also are responsible for assessing the health and performance of the current Nuclear Stockpile and contributing to the Annual Assessment Report for the Nuclear Stockpile. We provide stewardship of our designs and products from delivery to the stockpile through disposal at end of life. The 2584 Teams emphasize quality, performance, and innovative approaches.
