Job DescriptionA post-doctoral research associate position is available immediately in the Optical Diagnostics for Diseased and Engineered Tissues lab headed by Dr. Irene Georgakoudi at Tufts University https://engineering.tufts.edu/bme/georgakoudi/ ).
The Georgakoudi lab aims to develop and implement multi-modal two-photon imaging approaches the enable understanding and quantitative characterization of metabolic and biomechanical tissue function. We explore harmonic generation in combination with intensity and lifetime fluorescence imaging at a combination of wavelengths in order to identify imaging conditions that enable identification of cell populations in distinct metabolic states and of matrix configurations that yield different biomechanical properties. Computational modeling and robust image analysis approaches are critical to these efforts. Major application areas that we explore involve dynamic changes and interactions that occur at the onset of cancer or in engineered brain tissue models. The projects involve close collaborations with clinicians and biomaterials/tissue engineering experts. The candidate will also have the option of developing other projects that are broadly within the lab's
scope and will have the potential to collaborate with a wide range of laboratories in the Boston area. At Tufts the postdoctoral scholar will also have opportunities to participate in numerous professional development workshops and to apply to programs such as the Tufts IRACDA program (https://gsbs.tufts.edu/academics/tuftsiracda/applyingiracda) for those especially interested in pursuing academic careers.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (biomedical engineering, physics, optics, electrical engineering, computer science) and a strong publication record that reflects individual accomplishment as well as the ability to engage in multi-disciplinary/collaborative projects. Prior experience with optical instrumentation, imaging and image analysis using MATLAB or other programming languages is expected. The candidate should have strong verbal and written communication skills in English,
drive to pursue innovative solutions to important biomedical problems, and interest to work with and mentor others.
