Job DescriptionThis postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with interest in solving some of the United States' most challenging national security needs! Do you have interest in pushing the limits of understanding, performance, and operational systems? If you have background conducting research in power electronic systems and controls this may be the position for you! Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to: + Research related to power conversion systems for stationary on-grid or off-grif energy storage applications as well as other distributed energy resources such as water, PV, and wind power conversion. + Creation and development of devices, components, and systems + Engagement in a high-performance dynamic team + Assurance of safe and secure operations that are consistent with ES&H and security
+ PhD in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or a related discipline + Experience with power electronic systems and associated circuit board design (gate driver & power stage) + Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Switch-mode power supplies such as voltage source converters, current source converters, and multi-level converters
- Modeling converters in electric utility steady-state and dynamic simulation
- Electric utility disturbances such as voltage dips, oscillations, harmonics, etc. and their effects
- Power electronic circuits and components + Experience with open and closed-loop control methods such as pulse width modulation and space vector modulation + Experience generating control software code and programming microcontrollers + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
+ Knowledge of electrical simulations tools (e.g. Matlab, SimPowerSystems, PSCAD, PSSE, and PSPICE) for steady-state and dynamic simulation of common electric utility disturbances + Familiarity with thermal management or heat-transfer means for power electronic systems + Experience with the design and operation of motors such as induction motor and synchronous motor technology including steady-state and dynamic/transient electrical models + Experience modelling these systems in steady-state and dynamic electric utility applications + Understanding of power electronic hardware fabrication and testing + Research experience in an area relevant to Pulsed Power and/or microgrid (military or civilian) design, control, and testing + Knowledge of electric energy storage technologies such as batteries, flywheels, electrochemical capacitors, etc. + Knowledge of transmission planning and operation as applied to energy markets + Familiarity with power system planning tools such as PSLF/PSDS, PSS/E or equivalent + High voltage electrical safety training or willingness to complete training + Strong interpersonal skills, including effective leadership, delegation, teamwork, negotiation, conflict resolution and mentoring skills + Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the development and delivery of presentations, proposals and reports + Experience with ultra-wide band gap devices
