The Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) ( www.forensicscienceeducation.org ) at the Fredric Rieders Family Foundation (FRFF) provides forensic science education programs, courses, and seminars at the high school, graduate and post-professional continuing education level. We operate a facility with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation dedicated to the support of our educational and research mission. Available analytical equipment includes thermal cyclers and genetic analyzers, HPLC, GCMS, HS-GCMS, LCMSMS, LCTOF, and a range of microscopes and other laboratory equipment and instrumentation. FRFF receives support from NMS Labs, the nation's leading independent provider of professional laboratory testing services, specializing in clinical toxicology, forensic science, and other vitally important areas of esoteric testing and expert services, and offers opportunities for collaboration to Foundation staff.
The Foundation is seeking a regular, full-time, Epidemiologist/Data Scientist to join the staff.
The person in this position is responsible for managing data regarding drug testing (e.g. drug of abuse, seized drugs, population demographics, geographic, etc, data sets) and generating user appropriate reports and/or models (e.g. trends) based on the data. In addition, the person will be creating data archives of clinical and forensic drug testing data, curating these, and building or implementing tools for their analysis and display, including open access externally facing web reports/portals and the creation of content for scientific presentations and publications. This individual also works closely with toxicologists and laboratory scientists to understand their needs in terms of identifying trends and patterns in data, and must be able to discuss drug safety/risk findings with para-professionals. They work with external stakeholders in translating data into actionable information in support of public health and safety
Education and Experience
Master’s degree required, preferably in public health with an emphasis in epidemiology but can possess degree in other related fields and specializations.
Background in data science, computer science, bio statistics, and/or bio analytics is preferred.
Strong math and statistical skills are required.
Coursework in chemistry and/or toxicology is preferred.
Should have experience in the procurement, curation, organization and/or analysis of large sets of data
Must have experience with report generation and publication writing.
Experience in the use of R, Python, SQL, Shiny, Jira and other data analysis/performance management tools is preferred
At least two years’ experience of working independently in a multi-disciplinary team is required.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Collate and curate electronic data regarding drug and alcohol use from laboratory information management systems
Develop data analysis models for novel drug identifications, trends, and public health/safety aspects
Act as data liaison with public health, public safety, law enforcement, scientific, clinical project stakeholders
Manage large data sets using appropriate tools
Through oral and written reports, maintain regular communication with collaborators, specifically those in public health
Integrate multiple drug related data sets for trends analysis
Develop subject matter proficiency in the area of illicit and emerging drug use trends, and public health and safety consequences of those trends
Liaise with data scientists and epidemiologists in partner agencies to ensure alignment of data structures
Extending company’s data/reports with third party sources of information when needed
Identifying new data sources and collaborators for better data integration
Doing ad-hoc analysis, preparing specialized fot for purpose reports, and presenting results in a clear manner
Learning the business data needs of coroners, medical examiners, and public health agencies (e.g. CDC)
Utilize excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams
Represent the Fredric Rieders Family Foundation and the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education at various professional meetings through oral and poster presentations
Maintain regular and reliable attendance
