Job DescriptionApplications and nominations are invited for the position of Assistant Dean for Communications at the A. James Clark School of Engineering. The Assistant Dean for Communications, reporting to the Dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, is the college’s chief strategist responsible for developing and implementing an integrated marketing and communications program intended to raise the profile of the A. James Clark School of Engineering. The Assistant Dean is a member of the Dean’s leadership team and collaborates school-wide to guide the planning and execution of major marketing and communications priorities and campaigns. The position provides counsel and recommendations on reputational issues and crises affecting the college. The Assistant Dean leads a team of staff, consultants, and students, as well as provides leadership to the Clark School Communications community.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to 1) Develop and implement a sophisticated, aggressive and comprehensive school-wide branding, marketing, and communications plan; 2) Define and continuously refine the School’s broad and audience-specific awareness objects, targeted campaigns, positioning statements, competitive differentiators, and methods for monitoring and modifying the plan; 3) Execute communications campaigns incorporating new approaches and existing programs; 4) Serve as chief spokesperson for the school and liaise with UMD’s Office of Strategic Communications, Division of Research and other academic offices to collaborate in the management of crisis or issues impacting the school; 5) Manage signature events for the School; 6) Create and deliver high-quality content geared towards the needs of key stakeholders and focused on enhancing the overall reputation, communicating the school’s extraordinary emphasis on innovation and excellence, increasing school’s ability to recruit outstanding students and faculty, and improving the positioning of the school among important stakeholders; and 7) Work closely with Dean’s Administration and friends of the Clark School to assist in the positioning of the school for important fundraising endeavors, preparation of proposals and promotional materials to promote overall communication goals and to assure quality and consistency among the engineering units.
