This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Do you want to join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation’s security?** The Electric Power System Research team is seeking Postdoctoral Appointees with a passion for electric power system research. In a typical day, you might address: + Develop new optimization techniques for transmission planning with high penetrations of renewable generation and energy storage + Develop new optimization techniques for microgrid design + Develop new optimization techniques for improving grid resilience at the transmission and distribution level + Develop new optimization techniques for sizing, placement, and valuation of energy storage + Develop new models for accurately capturing interdependencies between the electric grid and other critical infrastructure + Create new protection schemes for grid tied and networked microgrids + Develop new control schemes to improve grid stability with high penetrations of renewables + Develop new control schemes for microgrids + Develop new analysis and control techniques for low inertia grids + Identify new PMU-enabled applications
You have the following: + Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a related discipline + Academic focus on electric power system research + Strong publication record
You also have one, or more, of the following: + Optimization coursework or experience + Control theory coursework or experience + Transmission planning coursework or experience + Power system operation coursework or experience + Protection coursework or experience + Familiarity with electric power system dynamic simulation tools, e.g., PSLF, PSS/e, PowerWorld, etc. + Strong programming skills, e.g., MATLAB, R, Python, C++, or similar language
The Electric Power Systems Research Department conducts R&D and advanced analytics to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid. This work includes the development of improved planning and operations methodologies from the bulk system down to end users. Our capabilities encompass the development and application of advanced algorithmic and computational methods, grid operations, economics, and policy. Examples of specific core areas include power system dynamics, operational reliability, advanced renewables integration, electricity market development, smart grid technologies and related information analysis, optimal resource expansion, and computationally based decision support. This department is highly inter-disciplinary, working collaboratively with universities, utilities, government agencies, and both national and international research organizations.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base.
