The Functional Genetics Section of the Genetics Branch, National Cancer Institute, (NCI), Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research program that uses RNAi and other DNA or RNA-based functional genomic technologies to interrogate specific aspects of the genetic, transcriptional, and cell-signaling alterations observed in cancer cells. Our current research focuses on the development of new treatment strategies for cancers driven by fusion oncoproteins. Since only tumor cells express and depend on the products of fusion or chimeric oncogenes, a fusion transcript or protein represents an ideal molecular target. We hypothesize that proteins needed for the expression of fusion oncoproteins will reveal new therapeutic targets for tumors dependent on their oncogenic activity and potentially other cancers. Using functional genetic approaches coupled with molecular, biochemical, and cell biology-based methods our specific aims are to discover and characterize proteins required for the post-transcriptional or post-translational regulation of fusion oncoproteins. We work with other investigators within the intramural program and take advantage of the uniqueness CCR intramural program in that our studies span fundamental discovery through preclinical translational research. The work of the successful applicant will focus on study of a novel regulatory post-translational modification we have identified as required for the stability of a class of transcription factors associated with several tumor types.
Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree, or equivalent, in molecular/cell biology or biochemistry, or related disciplines, ideally with additional training in the computational analysis of large-scale genome and transcriptome data. Applicants should submit a cover letter describing their research experience and interests, CV, including bibliography, and contact information for three references to Dr. Caplen, Ph.D., via e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org. No calls, please. If we are interested, Dr. Caplen will be in contact. HHS, NIH, and NCI are Equal Opportunity Employers.
