Job Description
Argonne’s VMS group is seeking a post-doctoral candidate to conduct research on aircrafts using alternative energy/propulsion, including electric, hybrid and hydrogen aircrafts, and participate in the Aeronomie development. The candidate will participate in:
Development of high-level models of fixed-wing aircraft in baseline and alternative propulsion versions for main aircraft classes used in commercial aviation.
Combine aircraft models and public data sources to model energy consumption at fleet level.
Development of high-level models of eVTOL aircraft for energy/performance analysis
Development of models of aircraft components for higher-fidelity components (in Simulink/Aeronomie)
Develop models of full aircraft, fixed-wing and eVTOL (in Simulink/Aeronomie)
Development of control algorithms for aircraft flight control and on-board energy management
Trade-off/case studies related to aircrafts with alternative energy sources
Development and maintenance of Aeronomie and other internal models.
Writing of scientific papers and engagement with stakeholders.
Position Requirements
PhD in Aerospace engineering.
Knowledge and experience in aircraft systems, and/or aircraft design.
Knowledge of flight dynamics and experience in aircraft flight control development.
Experience in model development in Simulink.
Experience in programming (e.g. Matlab, Python, R).

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in electric, hybrid and hydrogen aircraft design.
Experience in aircraft propulsion systems.
Experience in aircraft design software (e.g. OpenVSP, FLOPS).
Experience in fleet-level analysis.
Experience in flight data analysis and model validation.
Experience in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO).
Knowledge/experience in commercial aviation aircraft design, simulation, operations.
Knowledge/experience in VTOL aircraft, including quadcopters and hybrid designs (e.g. tilt-rotors).
Knowledge and experience in software development (source control, documentation, testing, etc.).
