Job DescriptionA postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Szaszi Laboratory at the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science at the St. Michael’s Hospital. This position is supported by a newly established Keenan Research Scholarship. We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished postdoctoral candidate with interest in studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of kidney health and disease. The position will allow the candidate to deepen their research skills and expertise in conducting research independently and to prepare for an academic carrier such as a research associate or independent scientist. The project will involve the use of cultured cell lines and animal models of kidney disease, and will utilize various imaging and molecular biology techniques The candidate is expected to have a PhD degree in cell biology and related areas obtained within the last 6 years and a thorough academic training as demonstrated by an excellent publication record.
The overarching goal of the Szaszi lab is to obtain in depth understanding of fundamental molecular mechanisms governing inflammation- and injury-induced responses of kidney epithelial cells with relevance to acute and chronic kidney disease. Our studies investigate the role of epithelial intercellular junctions and cytoskeleton-regulating molecules in epithelial plasticity. We wish to identify molecular processes that contribute to injury repair, and to explore drugs that can enhance repair and diminish pro-fibrotic transition of the epithelium. The current project will require a strong background in cell and molecular biology approaches, including expertise in fluorescent cell imaging (microscopy) techniques. Expertise using animal models is an advantage.
-Develop, initiate, and lead studies to discover novel cellular and molecular pathways governing epithelial injury repair, and validate new molecules as potential drug targets.
-Work independently with guidance from the supervisor to plan and execute experiments, adapt novel experimental techniques and approaches and to collect, analyze, and interpret data.
-Design and generate molecular biology tools including constructs and cell lines to modulate target proteins.
-Use models of kidney disease to validate newly described pathways.
-Assist the Investigator in writing and submission of research grant applications.
-Perform analysis, summarize results, and prepare presentation quality figures.
-Write peer-reviewed journal articles as first author, and maintain responsibility for academic output of research studies
The applicant is also expected to:
-Work together with Principal Investigator for optimal project design.
-Conduct ongoing review of relevant literature to keep up with current knowledge.
-Present at lab meetings, participate in discussions and provide insightful comments.
-Guide and mentor junior trainees on how to conduct research, provide technical and theoretical training.
-Contribute to ongoing coordination of laboratory.
-A PhD within 6 years in cell or molecular biology with relevant first-authored publications and expertise is required.
-Strong expertise in performing experimental work using mammalian cell models.
-Demonstrated experience in a variety of cell and molecular biology techniques, including microscopy techniques and approaches to manipulate target genes (gene silencing, knock-down, viral transfection systems, and site-directed mutagenesis). Experience with mammalian cells is required, experience using animal models is a definitive advantage.
-Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including scientific writing and verbal presentations in English.
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

-Ability to pay close attention to detail.
