What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee in Computational Materials Science to contribute to projects that advance the state-of-the-art in modeling of explosive materials and energetic components. This includes collaboration with scientists who are developing tools that improve physical process modeling capabilities, as well as collaboration with engineers responsible for the design and development of explosive components. The position includes fundamental research to develop material constitutive models, advance our understanding of the response of materials and devices to various stimuli, and characterize behaviors such as ignition, sustained reaction, and/or detonation of energetic materials. Development of science-based models is collaborative in nature, typically requiring collaborations with technical staff in Engineering and Computational Sciences centers as well as within the Explosives Technology Group. Design and analysis projects are multi-disciplinary, requiring knowledge of or teaming with experts in chemistry, thermal-fluids analysis, solid mechanics, shock physics, electrical engineering, and manufacturing. Presentation of results to customers and at engineering science forums is expected. On any given day, you may be called upon to: + Run simulations and parameters scans supporting the design, development, and maturation of new Explosive Components and technology + Apply groundbreaking modeling and simulation tools for analysis of energetic components’ performance margins throughout their lifecycles + Collaborate with experimentalists, and assist in the design of experiments for model calibration, validation, or basic understanding of explosive materials/device performance + Propose new research programs which advance the state of the art in energetics modeling capability Qualifications We Require: + Ph.D. in computational materials science, physical science, engineering, or computer science conferred in the last five years + Strong background in computational simulations, parallel computing, post-processing, and code development + Ability to acquire a Q clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Background in shock physics and multi-physics modeling + Experience in explosives technology and engineering + Demonstrable ability to work in a team environment + Experience with Sandia codes such as SIERRA, CTH, ALEGRA, or LGR + Possess good interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication abilities + Current Q clearance About Our Team: Department 7554, Explosives R&D, develops a science-based understanding of the performance of explosive components and energetic materials (EM: pyrotechnics, propellants, and high explosives) under static and dynamic conditions, including shock – we examine behavior of materials and devices far from their equilibrium states. Dept. 7554 is part of the Explosive Technologies Group, which is responsible for cradle-to-grave oversight of explosive components and the advancement of our understanding of the physics of EM behavior. The customer and collaborator base expands across the Nuclear Weapons enterprise to other government agencies, universities, and industry partners who are interested in EM applications and science. Projects vary from support of the nuclear weapon mission to fundamental research to novel EM applications.
