Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700. : We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work within a multi-disciplinary team of computational physicists, data-scientists and experimentalists to investigate magnetically driven inertial confinement fusion and high energy density science and applications! Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to: + Help to identify key science issues that need to be better understood and explored for ICF and HED targets and influence programmatic directions + Design and analysis of experiments on Sandia's Z pulsed power facility + Collaborate with experimental and diagnostic physicists and engineers not only at Sandia, but the broader HED and ICF communities + Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at appropriate scientific conferences Join our team and achieve your goals while making a difference!
+ Possess, or are nearing completion of, PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Physics or closely related engineering field + Ability to obtain a DOE Q-Level security clearance
+ Technical competence in hydrodynamics and/or magnetohydrodynamics demonstrated through publications in refereed journals + Experience with applied data-science techniques, including (but not limited to) Bayesian analysis and deep learning + Experience in post-processing data using Python, Matlab, Mathematica, IDL, VisIt, ParaView, EnSight, or other platforms/scripting languages + Experience using massively parallel computing platforms + Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and reports, and in technical and project presentations + The ability to be self-motivated and to work as part of a diverse team, including project members from other NNSA labs
The Radiation & ICF Target Design Department (1684) pursues theoretical and simulation-based analyses and assessments of inertial confinement fusion (ICF), stockpile stewardship relevant, and other high energy density physics experiments on a variety of platforms, including the Z Facility and the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The department's core competency lies in the design and analysis of high energy density experiments, with a particular focus on ICF and radiation hydrodynamics experiments. They rely on complex, integrated, multiphysics simulation tools, with a particular focus on the magnetohydrodynamics of high energy density plasmas, and on spectroscopic diagnosis of high energy density plasmas. In carrying out their mission, department 1644 collaborates closely with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).
