World-class experimental and advanced computational facilities at Carnegie Mellon for Materials Research. Whether for structural characterization, materials processing, or property/performance determination, materials research is an equipment intensive enterprise. The MSE department maintains a range of central facilities available to all, especially focused on structural characterization and computations, and individual faculty maintain a broader range of equipment focused on materials processing and property/performance determination.
We are seeking a Materials Characterization Facility (MCF) post-doctoral researcher to assist in the operation of an array of materials characterization instruments in the MSE Department’s Materials Characterization Facility (MCF). The incumbent will have experience in transmission electron microscopy, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy and the ability to develop expertise in all areas of materials characterization. You should have an understanding of electron optics and scattering, experience in TEM sample preparation techniques, proficiency working with lab equipment (furnaces, vacuum systems, electrical, electronic and plumbing equipment, sample preparation equipment, fume hoods). This would include; safe handling of various chemicals and gasses; willingness to travel to conferences and other academic locations; ability to pay close attention to detail, meet flexible deadlines, remain calm during difficult situations, work under pressure with frequent interruptions.
Core responsibilities will include:
Collaborative research with faculty and students on campus
Instrument maintenance and user training
Supervising undergraduate and graduate lab classes and instruct and supervise lab users
Interacting with and assisting local researchers, visiting researchers and industrial users
Documenting information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records

Doctoral degree with experience in materials characterization.
At least 1 year of relevant work experience required
Experience working in an academic setting as well as some supervisory experience
Experience with Cs corrected microscopy, EELS, analytical microscopy, simulations
