The selected applicant will work across multi-disciplinary teams to advance the state of the art in high density integrated electronics and photonics. This work will span multiple physics domains including thermal, optical, and electronic effects. This is a great opportunity to make a mark in an exciting field with next-generation technology. On any given day, your duties may include the following, depending on the specific role: + Identify, analyze, and provide solutions and alternate approaches to integrated electronics and photonic problems using individual creativity and judgment + Apply technical judgment in determining efficient application of potential solutions + Multi-physics modeling of high-density devices, components, or systems + Running experiments in an optical lab or in the field + Collaborate with your team to solve encountered problems + Report results through team meetings, writing publications, and attending conferences
+ PhD acquired within 5 years' prior to employment, in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level clearance
+ Strong record of publication and innovation as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents + Proficiency with analytical and modeling software (i.e. COMSOL, Ansys, Lumerical, Sylvaco, FDTD, MATLAB, etc.) + Experience with programming languages (i.e. C++, Python, etc.) + Experience with complex multi-physics systems involving thermal, optical, and electrical phenomena + Experience with electrical and optical laboratory-based testing equipment + Ability and willingness to work across fields and learn in areas outside your area of expertise + An established record of project execution for R&D activities + Ability to prioritize and balance competing activities across multiple projects + Strong collaboration and teaming skills, as well as self-motivation to work effectively as an independent contributor + Ability to discover, understand, and articulate customer needs + Current and active DOE L-level or Q-level clearance
We have researched and developed new monitoring systems and technologies for over half a century. Building on that legacy, today we support national security missions involving nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, and various needs within the national security communities. We advance national security missions through the development of innovative concepts for active and passive remote sensing systems, signatures, and exploitation. The department maintains a breadth of remote sensing competencies including target phenomenology, scene simulation, radiative transport, optical sensor modeling, spectral & temporal data processing, and algorithm development. This collection of proficiencies allows the group to develop novel, mission specific sensor concepts as well as assess and predict mission performance. The projects within the group span diverse mission areas including, but not limited to, Nuclear Nonproliferation, Weaponization, USNDS, DoD, OPIR, and the Intelligence Community. The department is actively engaged in program development and maturing enabling capabilities by transitioning research and development from across the laboratory through the Lab Directed Research and Development (LDRD) process.
