Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Beckstead lab is hiring a staff scientist to perform and direct projects involving single neuron electrophysiological experiments in mice. The successful candidate should be able to design and conduct electrophysiological experiments, prepare reports and papers for publication, communicate research in poster and oral presentations at relevant conferences, and assist with grant writing. The candidate will also be asked to oversee and/or manage research projects as well as guiding and training graduate students, postdocs, and lab staff. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate should have several years of experience performing patch-clamp experiments (including perforated patch) in live brain sections from rodents, knowledge of basal ganglia circuitry, and familiarity with quantitative measures of the determinants of action potential initiation. The candidate should possess skill in formulating and testing hypotheses, analyzing large amounts of data in a highly quantitative manner, writing scientific manuscripts, assisting in the writing of grant proposals, communicating both orally and in writing, mentoring students and directing the work of less senior scientists. Finally, the candidate must always act in a highly ethical manner in regards to obtaining and analyzing data as well as the appropriate treatment of lab animals. Ph.D. in a biological science, chemistry, physics or other relevant area, M.D., or equivalent AND a minimum of three (3) years postdoctoral experience.
Minimum Degree Required:
Six (6) years of postdoctoral experience.
Regularly required to stand, use manual dexterity, talk or hear; Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or rodent dander. May work with toxic, caustic chemicals, radioactive materials, liquid nitrogen, human tissue or blood. Potential risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure to cold 4C, and/or extreme cold -80C from freezers. Noise level is usually moderate.
