Are you passionate about research related to the characterization of thermally sprayed material microstructures, interfacial composition and behaviors imbued by those structures? If so, you will want to consider applying to join our dynamic, multidisciplinary team of materials scientists, nuclear engineers, and others. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct research in thermal spray to describe, assess and understand materials characteristics and properties. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan and perform experiments, install, repair, and maintain diagnostic tools, collect and analyze data with the goal of understanding and characterizing the process-property-performance relationships of thermal sprayed materials + Perform design necessary to support projects or experiments + Publish journal articles and present work at local, national, and international conferences
+ You have, or are pursuing a PhD in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering or a related discipline and you possess a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) + You have experience or academic training in Thermal Spray Coating research and development + Your background includes experience using materials characterization instrumentation (TEM, SEM, XRD) + You bring a history of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences + You can obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Ideally, your background will also include: + Experience with crafting and conducting experiments + Experience in characterizing High Entropy Alloys + Experience in nano-ceramic or nano-metallic processing + Experience operating Lasers for diagnostics + Experience in computer programming (MatLab, Python, etc) + Experience demonstrating teamwork and positive customer interactions + Proven ability to establish strong collaborations across multiple disciplines
The Spray Research Technologies Department Mission is to provide Subject Matter expertise to the Laboratories in Thermal and Kinetic Spray technologies. We conduct research on the structure, processing, and properties of materials to improve the performance of coatings produced by 1) Plasma Spraying (Air and Controlled Atmosphere), 2) Twin Wire Arc Spraying, 3) Flame Spraying, 4) Cold Spraying and 5) Aerosol Deposition. We routinely support Sandia's engineers to tackle a broad range of materials selection, component design, component fabrication, coating process development, and process challenges by applying our fundamental materials science, physics, and chemistry expertise.
