This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. You will conduct research on emerging plasma simulation methods and applications. On-going modeling and code development efforts are part of state-of-the-art massively parallel Particle-In-Cell code. This Sandia proprietary code is used to model plasma generation through vacuum arc breakdown and the simulation of transient plasma generation and transport under non-equilibrium conditions using several advanced computer science algorithms to accommodate large variations in spatial and temporal scales. You can expect a dynamic team work environment where physics models and code development occurs in unison with validation and verification efforts as well as direct application to real world problems relevant to Sandia’s mission. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: + Advance the plasma simulation capability on tasks which demonstrate your skills and experience. + Support code development and implementation in a workflow that is tightly coupled to verification and validation efforts. + Participate in theoretical and/or computational research to further scientific knowledge on plasma generation, transient plasma behavior, and plasma transport under non-equilibrium conditions. + Participate in peer review of research through presentation and publication of results within Sandia and the broader computational plasma physics community. + Collaborate with internal and external plasma physicists to understand modeling needs and priorities as well as emerging plasma simulation techniques. + You will have a Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or other related science or engineering field. + Experience with theoretical and/or computational plasma physics. + Record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations within the plasma science community. + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
+ Familiarity with computational simulation methods for modeling plasma flow, generation and transport. + Familiarity with particle-based PIC or direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and/or particle-fluid (hybrid) codes. + Familiarity with code development in a modern programming language, particularly C or C++. + Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams. + Familiarity Linux OS, HPC platforms, and post-processing/data analysis.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
