This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : **Are you passionate about your work and want to utilize state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions?** **Do you enjoy collaborating with dynamic, multidisciplinary research teams?** We are seeking to hire a postdoctoral appointee with engineering experience. You will support the fundamental development and realization of rotating air-cooled heat exchangers (RHX) for applications in building technologies, including solid-state lighting cooling, solar PV inverter thermal management, and non-vapor compression refrigeration heat exchangers. Your work will include a wide range of R&D activities combining computational fluid dynamic modeling, laboratory flow and heat transfer measurements, device fabrication, and design for manufacturability. You will be part of a highly multidisciplinary team, and are comfortable acquiring new skills on an as-needed basis. On any given day, you may be called upon to: + Develop mechanical designs; + Build and test the thermal performance of prototype RHX and compare to conventional benchmarks; + Calibrate and validate computational models; + Collaborate with industry partners; + Mentor undergraduate summer interns and graduate students; + Present at conferences and communicate results in peer-reviewed literature. To be successful in this role, you have creative problem-solving skills, both abstract and concrete thinking, highly effective team work and interpersonal relations, and excellent oral and written communication. A strong work ethic and a passion for practical high-impact innovation are important.
You have the following: + Ph.D. in mechanical, product, or thermal engineering, robotics, physics, or related field. + Expertise in design, assembly, and characterization of thermo/mechanical systems.
You also have one, or more, of the following: + Knowledge of experimental methods in heat transfer and fluid dynamics, including thermography. + Understanding of rotary machines and design concerns such as wear, fatigue and tribology. + Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks including SolidWorks Simulation or equivalent. + Familiarity computational modeling of fluid dynamics and solid mechanics (e.g. CFD and structural FEA). + Expertise in mathematical modeling and parametric optimization (e.g. Python, Mathematica, MATLAB) and ability to quickly perform order-of-magnitude analyses. + Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance.
The Energy Innovation Department (08356) is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers working on fundamental scientific research and technology development that support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
