Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow, Bioluminescence Response, Fort Pierce, FL.
The Postdoctoral Fellow, Bioluminescence Sensor Development, will characterize the bioluminescence response of marine organisms with new prototype sensor systems being developed at HBOI. One sensor system will measure the temporal kinetics and intensity of bioluminescence responses concurrently with several ancillary measurements including a holographic imaging system, shear probes, and sensors to measure the optical properties of water. Several types of marine organisms will be tested in the lab, including phytoplankton, microzooplankton, Cnidaria, and krill. Another sensor system is a SPLATcam, which images the bioluminescence responses of organisms impacting a screen during water column profiling. The Fellow is expected to be involved in aspects of development and characterization of these systems. The Fellow is also expected to participate in field deployments with these systems, data interpretation in terms of organism distributions in time and space, and publication of results.
Ph.D from an accredited institution with applicable coursework in an appropriate scientific degree required at time of application.
Strong proficiency in MATLAB required.
Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers of different disciplines (electronic, optical, software and computer), technicians and students required.
Ability to travel, perform fieldwork, and participate in oceanographic research cruises required.
Experience with organisms in the marine environment, bioluminescence behavioral responses, and ocean optics preferred.
Ability to work flexible hours when required to conduct fieldwork and research cruises.
