The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Fellow (Post Doc). The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for conducting ongoing research in identification of protective African Swine Fever Virus antigens, formulation of prototype vaccines, and conducting efficacy studies in pigs. Additional area of research will involve defining novel protective BVDV epitopes, testing efficacy and cross-protection of novel BVDV mosaic antigens in cattle. Some efforts will also be directed at the development/optimization of Lateral Flow diagnostic tools and EliSpot readouts of interest for which there is no commercial products in the market. The on-going USDA and NIH supported research projects will utilize multiple live vector platforms, and studies will be conducted in commercial swine and cattle at BSL2/3 levels.
-Define correlates of immune protection against livestock [African Swine Fever Virus and Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus] and human pathogens of interest.
-Utilize the correlate of protection knowledge, and cutting edge technology and approaches to rationally identify protective vaccine targets.
-Design, generate, quality control validate recombinant live-vectored/protein-based prototype vaccines.
-Conduct prototype vaccine safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity studies in relevant hosts. The in vivo studies will evaluate multiple adjuvant-antigen combinations in dose escalation/dose limiting studies.
-Evaluate protective efficacy of lead prototype immunogen formulations in relevant hosts
-Participate in planning experiments.
-Data analysis and interpretation.
-Generate technical reports and manuscripts.
-Participate in research proposal development
-Submit intramural and extramural grant proposals
-Hands-on training of new students and provide oversight of daily programmatic activities.
-Function as the lab manager and ensure compliance with university regulations
-Develop lateral flow-based diagnostic tools
-Develop and optimize EliSpot/Flow assay-based cytotoxic T lymphocyte [CTL] readout for swine and cattle.
-Ph.D. training in Molecular biology/Immunology/Vaccinology
-Hands-on experience generating live-vectored subunit vaccines
-Generation and affinity purification of recombinant proteins using mammalian cells/insect cells/yeast
-Conducting safety/immunogenicity and experimental vaccine efficacy studies in cattle and pigs
-Hands-on experience conducting cytotoxic T lymphocyte killing assays using chromium-release assay or other assays
-Conducting EliSpot assays using cattle and pig lymphocytes
-Experience with analysis and interpretation of vaccine response data from swine and cattle
-Development of lateral flow assay and adjuvants
-Hands-on skills in generating and maintaining primary swine and bovine fibroblasts
-Skills in bioinformatics and FACS
-Excellent oral and written communication skills
