The goal of Dr. Peter Forsyth’s laboratory is to discover mechanisms and treatments for Leptomeningeal Disease (LMDz) and brain metastasis. We have developed techniques that allow for the collection, ex vivo culture and detailed characterization of Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) in the CSF. Most of our work is in Melanoma. Our overarching goal is to define the genetic and transcriptional profiles of the CTCs from patients with LMDz and to identify novel therapeutic targets for these tumors. We work in close collaboration with Dr. Smalley’s lab.

• We will use various platforms to perform single cell RNA and DNA analysis to define the clonal relationship between LMDz CTCs and matched melanoma specimens from other sites.
• We will collect serial CSF specimens from LMM patients undergoing treatment with targeted therapy and will determine how treatment drives clonal selection.
• Established culture protocols will be used to expand CTCs that will then be screened against a curated library of clinically relevant anti-cancer drugs.
• We will use in-vivo mice model to study the progression of LMDz
• These studies are expected to provide critical new insights into the biology of brain and leptomeningeal melanoma metastases and form the groundwork for the development of clinically relevant drug combinations.
• We offer an excellent training environment for young scientists as part of a larger Tumor Biology Research Group.
The Ideal Candidate:
• Experience in writing and submitting publications is necessary.
• Experience in writing and submitting grants is useful.
• Efficient in communication and documentation of data.
• Experience with in-vivo animal models is required.
• Design and perform necessary experiments that drive research project forward.
• Write abstracts and manuscripts independently or in collaboration with the PI.
Credentials and Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology or related disciplines.
