This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct experimental and theoretical research and development related to electrochemistry. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Develop and utilize cutting edge electrochemical and surface analytical techniques to study atmospheric corrosion mechanisms + Perform research in the area of localized corrosion to support additive manufacturing initiatives + Perform research concerning atmospheric stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steels + Publish innovative research in leading technical journals and present at national and international technical meetings
+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related STEM field + Academic focus in electrochemistry or corrosion + Experience in electrochemistry, electrochemical characterization + Good communication skills and research collaborations as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences + Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE L clearance
+ Familiarity with a range of surface analytical techniques, such as optical spectroscopy, XPS, SIMS, profilometry + Experience with scanning electrochemical probe or microelectrode techniques + Record of integrated computational and experimental approaches for study of corrosion or electrochemical phenomena + Technical skills related to programming, data processing, and instrumentation + Ability to interact with team members of diverse technical backgrounds
The reliability of devices, components, and ultimately systems is directly affected by the properties and interactions of their constituent materials. Our department’s corrosion R&D activities focus onunderstanding the mechanisms of corrosion phenomena as means of developing improved next generation approaches to corrosion monitoring and control along with development of corrosion resistant materials. These activities are team-driven and highly multi-disciplinary in nature. Our efforts support DOE’s Defense, Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, Fuel Cycle Technologies programs and other federal agencies and industry. In addition, we pursue partnerships with universities and establish ongoing collaborations with other experts in the field to leverage our research investments while participating in, and contributing to, the international research community. Our current research thrusts include atmospheric corrosion mechanisms, atmospheric stress corrosion cracking, coating development, and additively manufactured metals.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance.
