What Your Job Will Be Like:
Do you want to perform innovative research impacting the conversion and distribution of energy? Are you passionate about research that impacts a broad range of problems of national importance?We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with technical expertise in power electronic devices, components, systems, and controls. In this role you will conduct research to create new capabilities using power electronics to increase the resiliency of power electronic systems, and to push performance limits using sophisticated controls and optimization. You will have the opportunity to design, test and develop future power electronic components and systems utilizing state of the art resources.Key functions of this role include:
- Supporting the design and analysis of future power electronic components and systems
- Collaborating with sponsors from defense, National security programs, and partners in utility systems and renewable energy
- Providing technical guidance to identify new solutions for systems reliability
- Contribute to high-risk, high-value research and development
- Collaborate with highly motivated and talented researchers on challenging research questions
- Disseminate your work via leading publication and conference venues
- Support research that impacts broad-ranging national security areas in the broadly defined domains of the electrical grid, military, and other critical systems.
The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.
Qualifications We Require:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, or in a related field
- Experience in research and publishing in power electronic components and systems
- Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- Proven experimental research in experimental power electronics
- Demonstrated experimental research in advanced controls
- Proven experimental research in materials and devices
- Familiarity with thermal management or heat-transfer means for power electronic systems
- Experience with analysis, modeling, and simulation of power electronic systems
- Experience in design, maintenance, and operation of power electronic systems
- Experience with real time simulators
- Experience leading and completing multiple programs and projects
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external sponsors
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple simultaneous tasks
About Our Team:
Department 1331 is a multidisciplinary research and development group supporting NNSA Defense and Strategic Partnership Programs. Our capabilities include experimental electromagnetics, the design and manufacturing of advanced power electronics, compact high current drivers, development and analysis of advanced materials and components, and plasma physics. Department 1331 employs a comprehensive research approach that includes analysis, simulation, and hardware verification. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.
Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Position Information:
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
