Post-Doctoral/Ph.D. Positions in Medicinal Chemistry, at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisboa, Portugal

The research is concerned with the development and evaluation of novel target-orientated molecules for pharmaceutical application. A particular emphasize will be given to the discovery of novel compounds either on metallodrugs as probes for molecular imaging or on anti-neurodegeneratives. There will be some drug design work based on molecular simulation studies on lead compounds, namely in terms of prediction of ligand-protein interaction and ADMET properties. The selected compounds will be synthesized and evaluated for their physico-chemical properties including lipophilicity, acid-base properties, metal-binding properties; then they will be bioassayed in vitro (ex: for anti-neurodegeneratives, inhibition of prominent enzymes, antiapoptotic neuroprotective actions and toxicity; for the imaging probes, relaxivity of the Gd complexes); the most promising compounds will be assayed in animal models (in collaboration with pharmaceutical-medical research centres).

The research positions will be sponsored by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. The research will be mainly carried out at Centro de Química Estrutural (Group of Bioinorganic-Medicinal Chemistry), Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisboa, Portugal. Depending on previous training and personal interest, the post-doc may also carry out, bioassays at other bio-medical research centres in Lisboa or Coimbra. Candidates should have a strong formation in organic or bioorganic/bioinorganic chemistry. The Post-Doc position is for 1 year, renewable for 3 years and the applicant should hold a PhD in Chemistry.
The Ph.D. position is for 4 years and the applicant should hold an excellent academic degree and M.Sc degree in Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or related fields. Candidates must be trained in synthetic organic chemistry methodologies, chromatographic purification and characterization of the compounds (optical spectroscopy, binuclear NMR).
Training in anyone or more of the following additional topics, though not essential, will further strengthen the application: computational molecular simulation methods; aqueous coordination chemistry.
